Medical Benefits of Using Magic Mushrooms

Are magic mushrooms the same as cannabis?

People often use the terms "cannabis" and "marijuana" interchangeably, but they don't mean exactly the same thing.

The word "cannabis" refers to any product derived from the cannabis sativa plant.

Cannabis plants contain about 540 chemicals.
The term "marijuana" refers to a component or product of a cannabis sativa plant that contains a significant amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is a compound that is a major contributor to the effects of marijuana on a person's mental state. Some cannabis plants contain very little THC. Under US law, these plants are considered "industrial cannabis" rather than marijuana.
The rest of this fact sheet uses the term "cannabis" to refer to the cannabis stoner plant.

What is a cannabinoid?
Cannabinoids are a group of substances found in cannabis plants.

What are the main cannabinoids?
The main cannabinoids are THC and cannabidiol (CBD).

How many cannabinoids are there?
In addition to THC and CBD, over 100 other cannabinoids have been identified.

Has the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved cannabis or cannabinoids for medicinal purposes?
The FDA does not approve the medical use of cannabis plants. However, the FDA has approved several drugs, including individual cannabinoids.

Epidiolex, which contains purified CBD from cannabis, is approved for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome.
Marinol and Sindros, which contain dronabinol (synthetic THC), and sesameto, which contains nabilone (a synthetic compound similar to THC), are FDA approved. Dronabinol and nabilone are used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy for cancer. Dronabinol is also used to treat anorexia and weight loss in HIV / AIDS patients.
Is it legal to include THC or CBD in dietary supplements or foods?
The FDA has determined that products containing THC or CBD cannot be legally sold as dietary supplements. Foods with THC or CBD added cannot be legally sold by Interstate Commerce. Whether you can legally sell in a state depends on the laws and regulations of that state.

Can Cannabis or Cannabinoids Help Treat Health Problems?
Drugs containing cannabinoids may help treat certain rare forms of epilepsy, nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, and loss of appetite and weight loss due to HIV / AIDS. In addition, some evidence suggests a modest benefit of cannabis or cannabinoids for the symptoms of chronic pain and multiple sclerosis. Cannabis does not help with glaucoma. Research on cannabis or cannabinoids for other conditions is still in its infancy.
