Anti Procrastination

Procrastination is an insidious problem that affects almost everyone on the planet. But if you're reading this article, you probably already know that. In fact, if you're reading this article, you probably want to know how to get rid of it.

But if we want to do this, we have to take a detour to our emotions because if we really want to be anti procrastination, we need to understand what procrastination does for us emotionally and then figure out how to fill that void.

So, the first thing to do is consider what benefits you get from procrastination. Wait, what? Everything you do has a purpose and that purpose is beneficial in some way. And procrastination is no different. So, if you want to figure out why you procrastinate about something, just go inside and ask yourself: what benefits do I get from procrastinating?

If you have problems with this, the most likely cause is that you're resisting the process. So, here are a few reasons almost everyone is procrastinating-if you ask yourself questions like this or the question "why?" to most of the reasons below, you'll get to a deep root of why you waste time:

It just feels good to waste time. There's no one to please, no goals to achieve or fail at. And people just like things that feel good.

You can't fail when you procrastinate. However, procrastination often makes you fail at your goals, so it's a bad strategy to avoid failure-preparation is the strategy you want for that!

You don't risk ridicule when you procrastinate. This is like avoiding failure: if you never try, then you can't be mocked for it.

(But don't be limited! There are more!)

So, once you figure out what benefits you're getting from procrastination, you need to figure out how to get over that issue or replace it with something. Overcoming the emotional need procrastinating serves is the ultimate anti procrastination.

By this I mean that for instance if your procrastination is based in a fear of failure, then you need to focus on quelling your fear. Rather than fear failure, focus on how fearing failure is causing you to already fail. And that if you just simple stop focusing on the chance that you might fail, you can have the opportunity to see if you actually do! But honestly, until you actually allow yourself to try, you'll never know if you would have failed or not.

However, some people like me (a.k.a. workaholics), need to take breaks sometimes, but work three or four hours a day more than they should. We start to get to this point where we just can't concentrate. Or we no longer care about the work. Or we start to work... and then come back to consciousness hours later staring at Facebook with yet another wasted day under our belt...

This procrastination is much more difficult to crack: if it's from overwork, the best relief will come from setting boundaries. In other words, set a work schedule and only work during those hours-unless you really want to go back to work. In many cases, you'll find that within a week you'll be more productive than when you work all the time. It takes a highly disciplined person to be a non-stop workaholic. Even lawyers take breaks sometimes!

But sometimes this procrastination comes from a deep-seated dissatisfaction with our lives. In this case, you'll know because procrastination functions as a way to escape how horrendous you feel about things. If this is the reason you procrastinate, do not hesitate a single second longer: make the changes you need to make in your life now!
