How to Check Authenticity of Marble

Marbles add a certain kind of elegance in residential, commercial buildings, and even castles for so many centuries. In contemporary times, the demand for best quality marble has grown significantly. Marble is being used not only in flooring but also to make clothing accessories and furniture. Due to the nature of this rock, it becomes very hard to distinguish between good and poor quality marble. While there’s no fixed method of checking the quality of marble, there are some ways through which you can identify lower-quality materials.

  1. Knife Test: Authentic marble is a metamorphic rock that is created by inducing heat into limestone. Therefore it tends to be soft and can be easily scratched. This is the reason why marbles are used so much for creating statues and sculptures as they can be easily curved. So if you can scratch the surface of marble with a knife that means it has best marble flooring. If it does not show any damage that means it is manufactured and is not authentic marble.
  1. Search for Veins: The swirls and veins inside a marble slab are created during the process of heating the limestone. Various kinds of impurities are mixed in the marble and are responsible for creating the veins. Yellow sienna best quality marble shows blue or red veins and white Carrara marble shows cream veins. While manufactured marbles also can display such veins, they cannot be compared to the depths and designs of naturally occurring veins.
  1. Watch Out for the Colour: Best quality marbles can display a range of colors, from white to black. Authentic marbles come in a very subtle kind of colors while manufactured ones have starker color combinations. Marbles that are free of any impurities can appear white. Stark colors such as black, turquoise, or orange are created in manufactured marbles as a result of mixing cement or other human-made stones.
  1. Cracks and Chips: In any authentic and good quality marble chips and cracks are a very natural phenomenon. More than the usual amount of chips and cracks can indicate the quality of the marble is too soft or weak. If the cracks and chips are more than five percent of the entire marble slab, the chances of the slab breaking up while installing becomes very high.

Steps to check the quality of the marble:

The first step is to check whether the back portion of the marble is covered with net or mesh or not. That indicates the marble is fragile.

The second step is to hold a light at a 45-degree angle to the marble. If there are patches under a polished surface, it means the marble has holes.

The third step is to check more cracks and veins to make sure the marble is perfect for best marble flooring and is not fragile.

Post summary:

Marbles are very important stones to decorate our homes and furniture. While there is no fixed way to checking a quality marble, we have documented a few ways of checking the authenticity and quality of the marble.
