Is Huawei Honor 8 Worth the Money?

Huawei is the world’s #3 smartphone maker. It launched its flagship phone from the Honor series, the Honor 8, back in October 2016, in India, at a starting price of ?12,409. Although it has been two years since the smartphone was launched, it still offers tough competition to phones in its price range. Here’s why.

Design

It comes with a 5.20-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. It sports a glass body with metal around the sides. The curved metal sides are easy to keep a grip on, while the back has an attractive layering pattern that reflects light at different angles. Overall, the design is simple yet attractive.

Processor and OS

The device is powered by a 2.3GHz octa-core Kirin 950 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM. It is equipped with Mali-T880 MP4 GPU that can run even the most high-resolution games smoothly. This configuration enables the smartphone to perform a wide range of activities, from gaming to photo editing, with ease. It runs on Huawei’s version of Android 6 Marshmallow, Emotion UI (EMUI) 4.1. All the apps are placed on the home screen, just like Apple's iPhone.

Camera and Storage

Honor 8 comes with a dual 12MP rear camera setup, assisted by dual colour LED Flash and an 8MP front camera. The smartphone offers 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 128GB by using a microSD card on its hybrid SIM slot.

Other Features

The device has an accurate and fast fingerprint scanner. Under the hood is a 3000mAh non-removable battery with fast charging features.

The Huawei Honor 8 is a dual SIM (GSM) smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, USB OTG, FM, 3G and 4G (with support for Band 40, used by some LTE networks in India). Sensors on the phone include Compass/Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope.

Final Verdict

The Honor 8 is an excellent smartphone at its price, with a great balance between looks and performance. The camera setup is good and the fingerprint scanner is excellent. It has enough storage for apps, pictures and music. The biggest problem, however, is the operating system, which is an old version of Android 6 Marshmallow. Despite this, the smartphone does prove to be great value for money, especially since it doesn't look or feel like a budget phone.

And, for those on a budget, there are great options for financing available, including zero interest EMIs. So, go ahead and pick the phone of your choice without worrying about the cost.
