Drink Lots of Water: Drinking water keeps your body hydrated. It is good not only for your eyes but also overall health. When you are sufficiently hydrated, your eyes will not get dry or irritated.

Maintain A Healthy Diet: Food is the ultimate source of necessary nutrients for maintaining a healthy body. To keep your eyes healthy, you need your regular dose of vitamin A, C and E and nutrients like zinc, lutein, omega 3 fatty acids etc. You should have green vegetables, oily fishes like salmon and tuna, proteins like, eggs, beans nuts, pork, oysters etc. and lemon type fruits like oranges. A balanced diet also prevents obesity and diabetes which can lead to poor eye health.

Quit smoking: Smoking causes many eye problems like cataracts, macular degeneration and damages the optic nerve. All these affects the vision and can even lead to serious complications. So, it is best to quit smoking completely if you want to protect your eyesight.

Protect Eyes from The Sun: The ultraviolet ray of the sun can be harmful for the eyes. Always wear a pair of sunglasses to prevent it. You can also use contact lenses that are UV protected. Wearing caps or hats will add greater protection to the eyes.

Maintain cleanliness: Dirt and germs can harm your eyes, redden them, cause itchiness, irritation and damage your vision too. So, always maintain the cleanliness of your home and your surroundings. Use clean towels and linens only and change them the moment they start getting dirty. Always keep yourself clean too. Wash your hands if you need to touch your glasses or eyes.

Sleep well: Eyes remain active throughout the day if a person is awake, and just like the brain and body, they also need rest to function properly. You must make sure that you get a good amount of sleep daily to recharge your eyes and keep them healthy.

Rest Your Eyes Between Work: We do most of our official work on computer and we do it for a long time at a stretch which can cause pain and harm to our eyes and nerves. It is a great idea to look away from the computer screen twice or thrice in an hour. You can keep your eyes shut for a moment, stare at some other thing, roll your eyes and blink a few times to keep your eyes in good shape. For even better vision, get out of the chair and walk for a bit.

Maintain Proper Distance from Lights: You should always maintain an arm’s length of distance from a TV or computer screen and they should be below your eye level so that your eyes do not get strained. For the lighting at your house, do not choose too bright lights or your eyes will be stressed, enough but soothing lighting is a much better choice.

Do Not Rub Your Eyes: Many people have the habit of rubbing their eyes the moment they feel any irritation. However, they are not even concerned about it and on many occasions, they do not even care to wash their eyes. Thus, the eyes meet all the dust and germs and get infected by them. So, if you have the habit of rubbing your eyes, try to control yourself whenever you are triggered and get rid of it.

Be Careful About the Eye Make-Up: Some eye make-up can cause allergic reactions to the eyes. So be very careful about the brands you choose. Check if your eyes can stand it before applying it for a long time and always remove your make-up before going to sleep so that there cannot be any bacterial build-up in the eye area. The brushes you use to apply make-up should also be cleaned regularly.

Visit Your Doctor Occasionally: Even though you do everything that needs to be done to take good care of eyes, you must visit the doctor to have your eyes checked up once in a while. Getting your eyes tested helps in early detection of any problem which might be occurring. The truth is that, if we take good care of our eye health, we will be able to lead quite a healthy life for a long time.

Never neglect your health – whether it is your general health or it concerns your eye health.
