Why Grass Cutting Height Matters

When considering lawn care in Atlanta, many homeowners worry about the major things like fertilization, aeration, overseeding, dethatching, watering, and more. But what many people overlook is the importance of grass cutting. You've probably heard that there are ideal heights for different types of grass, but you may be wondering if it really matters that much. Here are a few reasons why the height you cut your grass matters.

Ideal Height

The best length to cut your grass depends on whether it's a warm season or cool season grass. Warm season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia should be cut shorter when they're in active growth, usually around half an inch. During the height of summer they should be cut longer at two or two-and-a-half inches. Cool season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass and Fescue should be cute two inches in active growth and then three-and-a-half or four inches during the height of summer.

Importance of Height

Cutting the grass too short or too long can pose different types of problems. If the lawn is cut too short, the roots tend to not reach as deeply into the soil, weakening the entire root system. If the grass is too long it may be difficult for fertilizer, water, and sunlight to penetrate the roots. Keeping your lawn at the recommended height makes it easier for it to resist drought, disease, and weed growth.

Frequency Considerations

How frequently you mow the lawn matters because the best way to mow is when you only remove a third of the height. If you mow the lawn too short in hopes that you won't have to mow as soon you may be dealing with additional problems like heat damage and weeds. However, if you wait too long to mow the lawn, you may have fungus or pest problems because of poor drainage. Most lawns need to be cut every six or seven days. This isn't always the case, so it's important to pay attention to the growth since the last cutting since the amount can vary depending on different conditions.

Mower Tips

The condition of your mower is another important component of good lawn care in Atlanta. In addition to setting the blade to the correct height, make sure the blades are sharp. Torn grass is both unsightly and more susceptible to disease. Fill the gasoline tank only three-fourths full so that it can vent properly as well.
