Group I

Group III base oils may be subjected to highest level of mineral oil refining. This is maximum among all the base oil groups. Even when, they are not chemically engineered, they can ensure better performance. With its wide range of attributes it is good as well for molecular uniformity and stability. Such base oils can be mixed with additives. They are marketed as synthetic or semi-synthetic products. The refining process of group III base oil is known as Hydro processing and Refining.

Group IV

Group IV base oils are chemically engineered base oils. They are synthetic base stocks used widely in major applications. Polyalphaolefins (PAO's) is a common example of these types of base oils. This synthetic base stock is often combined with additives. They can ensure to offer excellent performance. With wide range of lubricating properties they are used widely in automobile sectors. It is because of their stable chemical compositions and highly uniform molecular chains that these types of base oils are becoming more common in synthetic and synthetic-blend products. They are used for automotive and industrial applications. Group IV base oils may go Chemical Reactions for acquiring better characteristics.

Group V

Group V base oils are oils that do not possess their own characteristics but when mixed with other base oil can enhance their properties and applications. They are used in the creation of oil additives. The common example of Group V base oils are Esters and polyolesters. They are commonly used in the formulation of oil additives. They are generally not used as base oils themselves but they can add beneficial properties to other base oils.
