Uses of Steel Channels in Construction

Steel is one of the most popular metals used in construction due to its several useful properties. It is a very strong metal with corrosion resistance as well as extreme temperature resistance properties. Steel is used in many shapes in the form of sheets, plates, channels, lip channels, round, square, flat bars, angles, IPE sections, vastrap, expanded and flatex etc. There are many steel manufacturers in Cape Town that supply steel channels for construction purposes. Steel channels are used in many ways in construction, such as:

Buildings and structures: Steel channels are used in both industrial and residential buildings. Steel has always been used in building structures due to its strength and capability of withstanding harsh weather conditions. These channels are used as studs, joists, braces, girts structural components etc.

Roofing: Steel channels are used to provide support for roof decks in heavy-duty roofs. Steel provides the same amount of strength as wood rafters, it does not possess a threat of decaying or rotting. Not only are steel channels stronger they last longer, they are also smaller and lighter.

Walls: Steel channels are a brilliant substitute for traditional wooden walls. Same as roofing, steel channels eliminate the risks of decaying and rotting in walls and the wall structures are provided with more durability. While wood can twist or warp making the wall appear uneven and reduce its load bearing ability and rigidity, steel channels help a wall to last longer.

Door and window frames: Steel channels supplied by steel manufacturers in Cape Town can be used in both wood and metal frame buildings to secure doors and window frames. With the channels sliding over the door or window opening, a flat surface is left in the opening which is safer than wooden frames. This is more used in basement doors and commercial fire doors.

Trailers: Using steel channels for the construction of trailers is a long-lasting and cost-effective choice. There are various types of trailers that can be made with steel channels such as travel trailers, box trailers, flatbed trailers etc. The main frame rails and the tongue is created with heavy-duty steel channels. You can also use the channels as joists that run perpendicularly to the frame rails for building the floor structure and the outer edges of the trailer.

Vehicle frames: Steel channels are also used in constructing vehicle frames. Using these channels in creating main frame rails prevents the vehicle from excessive flexing by providing enough rigidity and strength.

Supports: Steel channels can be used as added support to wooden beams. Providing wood with the support of steels enhances the strength, rigidity and trustworthiness of building structures to a great extent. It can either be placed on top of the beam as a cap or the channels can be placed at the bottom of the beams.
