The Tuxedo Etiquette: What to Do and What to AvoidWearing a tux is a cherished tradition the world over. Tuxedos strike a timeless look and feel when done right. If you chose to wear a tux, you likely are attending an important event and want to look your best. Here’s what you need to know to tux appropriately.
When to wear the tux
The tradition is to wear one when attending an event taking place in either of two times; after sunset or after six o’clock in the evening—whichever comes first. You can wear it on any day provided you do so in the evening.
Where to wear the tux
The classic tux is revered as a most formal look outside the office or formal workplace. Mostly.the tuxedo is worn to a wedding, opera, theater/play opening nights, and formal gala.
Many events requiring attendees to wear a tuxedo to attend will explicitly state so in the invitation. A popular phrase used in the invitation is addressing the event as a “black tie” occasion.
Young men can also wear a tux to the prom. Accessories such as sporting a can or hat are okay as well, try your best to keep it simple and conservative.
Have a wingtip-collar shirt
Using a wingtip-collar exudes ”formal”. It will be made of lightweight cotton. Ensure your bow tie is on top of the wingtips and not on top of them.
Wear the classic bow tie
While it might take some practice to know how to correctly tie one, a black bow tie is the way to go—whether you are sporting a black or ivory coat. You can get a ready-tied one at the tux store if you are short of time, though. The bow tie should also be made out of glossy silk material.
What tuxedo colors to wear
The most popular tuxedo color is black with a white vest and shirt. But more adventurous men can choose blue tuxedos. Reserve an ivory tux for warm, summer evening occasions. You add a bit more personality with a colored, linen square pocket.
What about the vest?
Opt for a full-back vest if you foresee or plan to remove the coat later while the occasion is ongoing.
The classic tux jacket and shirt
The jacket will have welt pockets as opposed to flap ones while the shirt will be outright formal. The shirt can be textured, especially where it shows out under the jacket. When it comes to pleats, silk shawl pleats are the most popular. But peaked pleats are okay to have, too.
The shirt should also remain tucked-in and have studs instead of buttons showing out. You might want to get a cummerbund to keep it secured in there. Speaking of…
Wearing the cummerbund
Feel free to wear one to make your midsection more appealing. Only consider wearing it if you plan to have a bow tie, though. As for colors, black, burgundy and maroon are most appropriate (mostly black).
Go the whole mile and complete the look
Do match the color and material of your pants top that of your jacket . You can accessorize with silver and gold accessories, but we recommend going easy and being conservative in your choices and quantity. Cufflinks are a must but a watch is typically not required—you can keep the cufflinks to a silver tone.
Get shoes and socks that are darker than the pants. You’ll hardly go wrong with well-shined, black shoes.
Are kids’ tuxedos appropriate?
Traditionally, tuxedos have been a reserve for people around the age of 18. But kids tux options are available and alright to have to say suiting up a four-year-old ring bearer in an evening wedding or elaborate reception.
Practicing these ten, tux fundamentals, you are sure to get your tux etiquette up and elegant. Over to you.
