The Five Pointed Star Of The Order Of The Eastern Star

Freemasonry, which is one of the oldest surviving “secret” Orders, relies heavily on the use of elaborate symbols in their ritualistic work. The Order of the Eastern Star has borrowed several of those symbols for their use. They may not be used in the same way, but the idea behind the symbols are kept intact. Stars, which are often considered as symbolic of a great happening, are often used by the Order. The Five Pointed Star, which is ancient and sacred, is the emblem of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Composed of five triangles, the Star is used a medium of signifying to the members of the Order their inseparability from the Divine. The Five Points in the Star represents “humanity” represents the whole human body.

1- The White ray signifies the Head.
2- The Yellow and Green rays signify the Hands.
3- The Blue and Red rays are the Feet.
4- The Altar represents the Heart.
5- The Open Bible in the center is the Light of Life.

The prepared Altar with an open Bible is a representation of "That Light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."

You will see that the letters FATAL surround the center pentagon. The letters stand for "Fairest Among Thousands, Altogether Lovely," which is a reference to Song of Songs. Song of Songs, also called Song of Solomon, is one of the scrolls found in the last section of the Tanakh and a book of the Old Testament.

The Five Points are also five goddesses - five women that represent the Order.

1- The First Point is Adah, Jephthah’s daughter. She is represented by the color blue and a sword and veil. That is symbolic of the virtue of obedience to one’s duty. It is also symbolic of a member’s coming into the Order.

2- The Second Point is Ruth, who is the widow from the Book of Ruth. The color yellow and a sheaf of barley represents her. This point is about the virtue of religious principles.

3- Represented by the color white and a crown and sceptor is Esther, who is the wife from the Book of Esther. This Third Point is loyalty.

4- The Fourth Point is Martha, who is the sister of Mary and Lazarus, from the Gospel of Luke and the Gospel of John. Represented by the color green and a broken column, she illustrates undeviating faith during the hours of trial.

5- The Fifth Point, Electa, is from the Second Epistle of John, is represented by the color red and a chalice. She is symbolic of the power of endurance.

The Order of the Eastern Star uses symbols such as the star to speak about the power that lies beyond the universe that is visible. It speaks of the big reality of all that is unseen.
