Ectopic Pregnancy- Causes, Treatment and Symptoms

Introduction

Pregnancy is the most beautiful thing in a woman's life. She changes herself, her lifestyle and her priorities completely for her baby. She becomes a mother even before the baby is born. A huge amount of care is to be taken especially in cases of extraordinary pregnancies like ectopic pregnancy.

For a normal pregnancy to happen, the ovary releases an egg into the fallopian tube where it is supposed to stay for one day. After that, it comes into contact with the sperm to get fertilized. This egg stays in the tube for three-four days and then attaches itself to the lining of the uterus, to grow until a new life is born. This is the process of pregnancy in normal terms. But if instead of lining at the uterus, the egg implants itself into the abdomen or anywhere else, it is called the ectopic pregnancy.

It requires emergency treatment for this pregnancy as it can't happen naturally. Ectopic pregnancy cost is generally higher than a normal pregnancy.

Diagnosis of Ectopic Pregnancy

A fertilized egg obviously cannot survive outside the uterus. It has to be removed from anywhere else to keep the mother from having any major complications later. The egg cannot grow in a fallopian tube or abdomen as they are not made for it. There are generally two methods involved in the treatment of ectopic pregnancy. These are medications and ectopic pregnancy surgery.

At the initial stages of the pregnancy, there is no need for ectopic pregnancy surgery as the medication will suffice. An injection of methotrexate trexall is given to the mother if the pregnancy hasn't gone too far in the fallopian tube. It stops the cell from growing and simply absorbs them. If the pregnancy is caught early, then they can be treated very easily with the help of these medicated injections.

In case if the case has gone too far, and the mother was late in realising that she is pregnant or her pregnancy is not normal, then injections do not work. Then surgery is required. Through this, the process of laparoscopy is carried out. The doctor carries a very small incision in the lower abdomen and inserts an instrument called laparoscope which removes the ectopic pregnancy. However, if the fallopian tube is damaged with the pregnancy, it may have to be removed too. This happens in the cases where the problem is figured out at a very late stage, then there is a greater chance of the fallopian tube being damaged.

What after the treatment?

If your pregnancy was figured out at an early stage, then the medication treatment will carry out all the necessary tasks. This will save you from any collateral damage in the future as well. If you have the surgery to get it removed, and if the fallopian tube is also removed in it, then you may want to visit a doctor before trying again. Removal of fallopian tubes reduces the chances of pregnancy to a very great extent. You may want to visit the doctor and try out other methods of pregnancy such as ectopic pregnancy IVF wherein a special type of in-vitro fertilization is done keeping in mind the ectopic pregnancy history of the mother.

Generally, it is recommended by the doctors to wait for six to eight months before trying again even if the fallopian tube is not removed. If ectopic pregnancy has happened once, the chances of it happening again automatically go up. This increases your risk of damage inside as having medicated or surgery performed, again and again, can lead to permanent damage to the reproductive system.

Conclusion

What if you have gone through this phase already? What if you fear that this might be the case you have right now? There is absolutely no need to fear. Medical science has reached high standards and there is nothing of which there isn't a cure available. If you fear that this might be the case, visit the doctor as soon as possible and get the tests done. The ectopic pregnancy symptoms at earlier stages and during later stages is very different due to the complications involved. When the matter is solved only with the medication you will be able to save a lot as compared to later stages and even the chances of further damage decreases. So be aware of what is happening, and visit to the  doctor frequently to make sure you are having a healthy pregnancy, and if not then take all the precautions and medications necessary for your health.
