Levels of Detail for BIM As-Builts

3D modeling allows sharing your vision with others even before it comes to life. This is truly an amazing experience.

People in the AEC industry do not have to wait until the completion of construction to see what a project will look like. With 3D BIM (Building Information Model) services, the project concept can be shown in great depth and detail such that it appears just like the final project.

However, the replication of information from a point cloud to a BIM model, requires a great deal of effort and precision. Your BIM model will depend upon what you are trying to replicate, how you want the modeling to be done, and how you plan to use the component. Based on these factors, you may be looking for high detail or less detailed modeling services. This makes it important for you to understand what the different levels of detail (LOD) mean and you can then decide what suits your project best.

LOD 100 – Level of Detail 100

With LOD 100, elements may be graphically represented in the model using a symbol or some other representation. This model gives the most basic level of information without showing the shape, size or any precise locations.

LOD 200 – Level of Detail 200

The model element is represented graphically, within the model, as an object with approximate qualities, such as size, shape, location, and orientation. The attributes can be recognized as the components they represent.

LOD 300 – Level of Detail 300

With LOD 300, elements are modeled as a specific system or object with specific qualities of size, shape, location, and orientation. The model element is graphically represented within the model as a specific system or object. Non-graphic information can also be attached.

LOD 350 – Level of Detail 350

LOD 350 is similar to LOD 300, but in LOD 350, the model elements can also interface with other building systems. LOD 350 is especially useful for coordinating with other building systems and clash detection.

LOD 400 – Level of Detail 400

Using LOD 400 allows the same detail as LOD 350, plus specific qualities like the detailing, fabrication, assembly, and installation of the object being modeled. The model elements are modeled with great detail and accuracy to allow the fabrication of the represented component.

LOD 500 – Level of Detail 500

This is the strongest level of detail. This is a “field verified” model that includes size, shape, location, quality, and orientation. Non-graphic information can be attached. All these elements together create an extremely detailed model.
