Things to Know About Pan Head Machine Screws

Pan head machine screws are usually used to join metal to metal or wood to metal in rarer instances. People generally aren't that considerate or worried about the type of set screws they should be using for a simple repair. But there are situations when you may need to know the name or type of set screws you will be using. Speaking of pan head machine screws or even Aerospace socket set screws, they also have size and type variations. Let's take a look: 

Sharp or Blunt End:

There are Pan Head or Military socket set screws that are both sharp and blunt but are used for different purposes. The sharp ones are usually used to pierce wood whereas the blunt ones are used to join metal, which already has a drilled hole into it. The machine screw is blunt on the end because it is designed to be used where there is already a tapped hole.

Choose the Right Length of the Screw

You should be aware of the right length of the screw that you would be needing to go through completely through the two pieces that you are joining together. In fact, when you are using  Jam screws, you need to make sure that they are long enough to add a nut at the end. 

This is because a nut keeps the screw from moving or being worked loose. This is important in the case of machinery as it has a higher probability of speed or vibration generation, causing the screw to work loose.

The Type of Head of the Screw

A pan head screw is quite identical to a Military socket set screws, but what makes the actual difference is that a pan head screw is flat on the top but rounded on the sides what military screws are flat on the top. 

Another thing to consider is the type of head of the Metric socket set screws is a slotted head screw with a single line. These set screws are meant to be screwed in with a straight screwdriver whereas a screwdriver with two crossed lines is intended to be screwed in with a specific Philip's head screwdriver.
