How to visit Machu Picchu: practical guide

The trip to Peru was without a shadow of a doubt one of the most beautiful ever made in life: breathtaking landscapes, vast and unspoiled nature, noisy and colorful cities but the most important of all, Peru is the land of the Inca quarry trek 4 days and of Machu Picchu.

This city at the top of the Andes is one of the seven wonders of the modern world, one of a kind, magical and mysterious; until I passed the entrance to the site and started the climb I was not sure of what I would have felt seeing my wonder with my eyes. Machu Picchu managed to make me move with all its extraordinary beauty but above all the great expectations that grows 24 hours before the ascent to the site, a series of elements that will remain etched forever because the visit to this Inca site is something of special.

It was not so easy to organize this trip and as often happens what may seem trivial and obvious is not at all that's why, in this article you will find a mini guide that tells you everything you need to reach and explore Machu Picchu.

How to buy Machu Picchu tickets

Before leaving for the trip we were uncertain whether to buy tickets in advance or not; consulting blogs, asking people who had already been there all provided their unclear version. When in doubt and having planned the trip in detail, we have decided to buy the tickets and this, it is possible to do so by going to the official website of the Ministry of Culture, the only real authorized for sale.

But how to buy them?

Using a PC the site is flash so on other devices it doesn't work

Select from the menu " Lugar a visitar " and choose if you want tickets only for Machu Picchu or even for the neighboring mountains

  1. Choose the day and quantity
  2. Enter the names and passport numbers
  3. Generate the tickets that will be in PDF form
  4. Switch to the Pago phase using only the VISA
  5. Last step is the Check In phase, where you can print the tickets, it is important to do so because when you show up at the entrance gate you will need to have the paper ticket with you.

How to reach Aguas Calientes and then Machu Picchu?

To reach the site of Machu Picchu you must first reach the town of Aguas Calientes which is 15 minutes by bus from the archaeological site and to do so, there are four solutions to reach the town from Cusco: the machu picchu by train 2 days, bus, an incredible trek of 3 days (exactly the route the Inca did) and private car. The latter are the cheapest solutions but also those that require more time; we had very little time and lots of things to do, so we opted for the very expensive train but certainly the fastest.

Train tickets to Machu Picchu can be purchased directly from the Peruvian Railways Peru Rail website and you can choose between departures from: Cusco (Poroy) and Ollantaytambo.

There are various types of train from the super luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham to the basic but very well cared Expedicion (the one chosen by us).

Based on your trip and itinerary, choose which city you are most comfortable leaving from: we have chosen to leave from Ollantaytambo and return to the town of Poroy which is only 20 minutes by taxi from Cusco. The train takes an hour and a half for the outward journey and two hours and 3/4 the return. The train journey can be the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy a splendid view across the valley leading to Machu Picchu. Once you reach Aguas Calientes you will be able to choose from countless accommodations suitable for all budgets.

Reach the Machu Picchu Archaeological site

The climb up to the site of Machu Picchu happens as I told you from Aguas Calientes here in fact, you can choose between comfortable shuttles that leaves from 5.45 in the morning every 10 minutes or a climb on foot that lasts almost two hours.

I make you a premise, the archaeological site of rainbow mountain hike 2 days by Machu Picchu is really very large and will take your visit away one morning, in my opinion it is really useless to walk up the hill to the entrance on foot. There is no view or path through the mountain but only steep stairs that cross the road covered by mini buses.

Tickets for the shuttle can be purchased in Aguas Calientes, in the street where the buses leave there is a small ticket office; all you have to do is present your passport and pay $ 12 each way (both dollars and sols are accepted). A solution may be to buy the ticket for the climb and then to walk down. The first bus leaves at 5.45 but be careful, people are queuing since 2 am to be able to be among the first to enter. We queued up at half past three in the morning and there were already almost 100 people in front of us, but nevertheless, we managed to get on the first 10 buses that at that time leave one behind the other at 6 and 30 we were already inside Machu Picchu.
