As men, it can be really hard to open up about "personal problems", especially when we're constantly told to "man up" and "get on with it". Counselling is the last thing on the minds of many men.

How many of us feel they can share their vulnerabilities with their friends? Or would be given the time to talk about them without fearing ridicule?

As guys, we might find it easy to show our physical emotions. It's perfectly acceptable for a man to get angry and be told we have "anger issues" but would you feel comfortable telling a woman you're in a relationship with that she's hurt you emotionally or you need her to show her feelings more?

Maybe not, right? Sometimes we know what we want but we won't say it because we fear judgement by others.

Or we fear judgement by ourselves...

I know what it's like, I was like that for years. I had no idea how to ask for help. I needed help with depression, help with anxiety and help with anger management. But one day I realised that if I was ever going to have a lasting relationship with someone I really wanted to be with or progress in a career that I really wanted, I would need to learn how to communicate effectively and that was when I decided to seek counselling.

To really listen and to have the confidence to tell somebody what I wanted, whether it be a loved one or my boss, without worrying what their reaction would be. But most importantly of all, I learnt how to listen to myself. I learnt that it was ok to need counselling.

I learnt that by paying attention to my thoughts, feelings and emotions, I would be able to learn when something was right and when it wasn't and have the confidence to do something about it.

Counselling gave me the freedom to be who I wanted to be and not what I thought others wanted to me to be. With counselling, I can help you do the same for you.

And we hear people say things like "if you don't like your job, change it". "Why don't you just ask her out"? "If you haven't got time, make time". "If you want to do it, you'll do it" and "Whats the worst that could happen"?

Which is all great advice and if it was that simple, we would follow it, right? You don't have to be Einstein to know there is something wrong!

Other times, we know something is wrong but can't figure out what or don't know how to put it right.

Whether we know what's wrong or we don't, sometime's we just need some help to start getting to where we want to be.

Like a lot of the guys, as a child, I learn't to hide my real feelings. If I expressed anger, I would be told to "stop being naughty", If I laughed too loud, I was told to "stop being noisy". And as guys, we quickly learn that if we're feeling sad or upset, we don't show our emotions because "boys don't cry" and if I did cry, I felt pretty sure I would be ridiculed for it and called a "girl" or worse!

My father showed me no affection at all and this was who I learn't to "be a man" from. Someone who told me to keep quiet!

To boot, I was always watching 80's action movies, tv shows and cartoons which were full of gun toting hero's. So that was me; a guy who couldn't express himself but wanted to save the world. What chance did I have?

It took a long time for me to realise that the reason I wasn't getting on in life was because of the way I was approaching life. I was hiding behind a "macho" facade and nobody knew the real me. I might have appeared as the "strong, silent type" on the outside but on the inside I was lost.

Relationships came and went because I couldn't express what I wanted from them. Jobs and career opportunities too because I didn't know how to form meaningful relationships. Had I been able to listen to my feelings and not hide from them, I would have been able to ask for help when I needed it and do the things that were right for me and not what I thought "people" expected me to do.
I'm not going to pretend this will be easy
or you'll change over night but by working together, we can create a "safe space" where you can feel comfortable talking about whatever it is that is "bothering you". We'll work together to find solutions and find that feeling of being positive about your life again.
