Different Types of Turbochargers You Must Know About

Every IC (internal combustion) engine needs a stable air supply for ignition to spark the ignition inside the cylinder. In earlier days, the engineers used to consider different methods for delivering the required amount to the engine. Now, with the introduction of compact variable turbochargers, we have successfully downsized engines with high performance. Besides, it has also helped in decreasing their environmental impact for a sustainable society. 

A turbocharger is placed to compress more air flowing into the engine’s cylinder. During the process, the air is compressed; the oxygen molecules are closely bound together. With the increased air, more fuel can be added without the need for expanding the engine size. This helps in generating more mechanical power with significantly increased overall efficiency and quality combustion process. So, with the turbocharged integration in an engine, the size can be decreased, leading to weight-saving benefits along with overall improved fuel economy.

Types of turbocharger

Single Turbo

These are the most common and popular types of turbochargers from the turbo family. Size of the turbochargers can alter the results as large turbos aim to deliver higher levels of top-end power; on the other hand, smaller turbos can spool faster to deliver the best low-end power. These are cost-effective turbochargers used for increasing engine power and efficiency. With the help of different mountains such as turbo braces, these turbochargers are perfectly installed.

Twin Turbo

To install twin-scroll turbochargers in the engine, you need divided-inlet turbine housing along with an exhaust manifold that couples the correct engine cylinders with each scroll. It is possible to install two similarly sized turbochargers, among which the one is used at low RPM, and both are in action at higher RPM.

VGT Turbo

A variable geometry turbo (VGT) power solution that is especially prevalent in diesel engines with complex and expensive requirements. In a VGT, you will spot some rings of aerodynamically-shaped vanes crafted at the turbine housing for altering the area-to-radius ratio to match the revolutions of the engine. For instance, at low revolutions, the area-to-radius ratio creates more velocity and pressure to spool up the turbocharger more effectively.

Electric Turbocharger

This type of charger is basically to assist a normal turbocharger at lower engine speeds where for eliminating the turbo lag that a conventional turbo is unable to do. In this, an electric motor is used to spin up the turbo’s compressor from the beginning, and throughout the entire lower revs, this is done until the power from the exhaust volume gets high enough to light up the turbocharger.

Along with the different turbochargers, the mountings for installation also make the difference. So, things like a turbo mount bundle are used for efficient installing the turbochargers.
