Why UL Approved Labels are Important for Your Products

Sanctioned to do safety testing on products by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the US government, UL (Underwriters Laboratories) LLC is a renowned safety certification company in the world, which was founded 125 years ago in 1894. This private company sets its standards and measures to find whether products are being made with no faults and risks. If a product is given the green light by the company, the manufacturer of that product can then get a UL label attached to its product.

UL LLC’s main focus of scrutiny includes electrical devices, components, and fire safety products. The company has decided to broaden its realms and now examine the quality of water and food along with doing performance testing and environmental sustainability as well. The company has divided its certification into two categories: Recognition certification and Listing certification. You get listing certification from UL for a finished product and Recognition Certification for only a component employed into a product.

Manufacturers are not mandated by the US government to get their products approved by UL. But the company’s approval is nevertheless sought and should always be sought by manufacturers as it is beneficial for both the manufacturers and the consumers. This is because as Underwriters Laboratories is a not-for-profit company which examines products with no financial interest, users and consumers of UL approved products have a peace of mind knowing that a product has safety approval stamp due to a real concern for the end-user and not for using it as a mere marketing gimmick.

Manufacturers send their products to UL for testing because a lot of insurance companies demand UL approval as a requisite for insuring a product. Several big companies refuse to distribute electronic products if they haven’t got approval from the Underwriters Laboratories. Also, local policies in some states will not allow businesses to operate if they use products that are not approved by UL.

Once your product is approved by UL, you can then get UL approved labels attachedto your products. However, you cannot just get UL labels applied from any printing company. A label’s format, design, materials, and many other factors are first approved by UL. Once that is done, only a fully authorized company will print UL approved labels. These few top companies have been given the certification to produce UL green-lighted labels after going through rigorous qualification tests.
