5 Things You Have to Do in Smoky Mountains National Park

The Great Smoky Mountains have so much to offer. Whether you’re just passing through or you’re planning to spend a week exploring, there are a few things that every visitor should do while inside the Smoky Mountains National Park.

Clingman’s Dome is perhaps the most breathtaking point in the Smoky Mountains National Park. With the peak sitting at 6,6443 feet, it’s one of the highest points in the state of Tennessee. This is one site that hikers and non-hikers alike can appreciate. By driving the scenic access road from Newfound Gap, the peak is a quick half-mile walk. With an observation deck at the top, the views are absolutely breathtaking.

Fontana Lake is another “must-see” while in the park. Found on the southern border of the park, this 240-mile shoreline is picturesque and perfect for anyone looking to spend some time on the water. Whether you love to kayak, paddleboard, canoe, or fish, Fontana Lake is the perfect place to spend a few hours.

The Smoky Mountains was home to many before it became a national park. While touring the sites, be sure to stop at Cade’s Cove, Oconaluftee, or Cataloochee to get a glimpse into what life was like in centuries past. You’ll find churches, mills, barns, cabins, and schools that were built hundreds of years ago.

There are over 100 cascades and waterfalls inside of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Grotto, Laurel, Abrams, and Rainbow falls are all well-known falls that can be accessed by foot. If you’d prefer not to hike but still want to see some falls, Meigs Falls, The Sinks, and Place of a Thousand Drops can be accessed by car.

With over 71 miles located inside of the park, the Appalachian Trail is an excellent place to spend some time. You can choose to walk for as long as you’d like, with plenty to see along the way. During the fall months, the foliage changes to vibrant colors, while in the spring, the wildflowers will give you a lush view of pastels.
