Protect your computer from the summer heat

These days the heat is making Italy suffer a little. If we "humans" resort to various stratagems such as fans and air conditioning, it is good to know that our PCs may also need help. Computers, in fact, already warm normally, these days suffer the heat more than we do. For example, if we have a laptop, we will notice that the keyboard temperature is significantly higher than usual. Let's not be frightened however, normally nothing happens and the computers do not get damaged by working at higher temperatures than usual.

In fact, there is a device that in case a critical temperature is reached immediately shuts down the system to prevent it from being damaged. However, it is good to try not to reach these levels. So let's see some ways to keep your PC cooler during the summer. We will first examine the generic solutions and then move on to particular cases.

In general :

Let's make sure that the components intended for ventilation are well functioning. For example, if we notice that the fan makes a strange noise, it may not turn well, and this, in the long run, leads to overheating.

We check that the vents are not blocked by dust or anything else.

We keep the computer well ventilated, so we avoid placing it in the middle of other objects or keeping it in contact with the body.

Avoid keeping other electrical devices that bring additional heat, such as modems, printers, etc. close to, or worse, in contact with them.

If not strictly necessary we avoid using for hours and hours "greedy resources" programs such as high definition games or video editing programs.

In the case of a not so new computer, it could be useful to lower the screen resolution and to remove the graphic effects of the operating system such as the animation of the windows, the shadows, etc.

If it seems appropriate to keep the temperature under control, we can use the S SpeedFan program. Warning: this program, in addition to allowing us to see the system temperature, also includes a series of adjustments regarding the speed of the fans and other factors that we still recommend not to touch.

Now let's see some advice based on the model of the PC we own:

As for desktops :

Column computers usually dissipate heat much better than laptops. It is therefore not necessary to take special precautions apart from the general ones seen before.

The desktops have the advantage of being able to modify the components easily by inserting others, among these there is also the fan that can be replaced with another (usually only by unscrewing a few screws on the back). Therefore if it seems to us that this is having problems or that it is too underpowered for the use that we have to make of the PC it could be useful to replace it.

A "home" solution that works very well is to place a small fan next to the "tower" that helps air recirculation.

Let's move on to laptops :

Notebooks suffer from the heat much more than desktop PCs. This is due to the type of assembly, which in order to be compact tends to sacrifice a little aeration, therefore it is good to pay a little more attention to avoid Laptop overheating.

First, it is essential that the laptop is thoroughly cleaned. We read this guide to perform the cleaning operation at best.

We avoid keeping the PC on the legs or resting on the bed or sofa as the air intakes, which are normally placed underneath, in this way would be plugged resulting in useless.

A very useful solution is to purchase a cooling base with fans. These bases are positioned under the laptop and powered by USB from the laptop itself provide additional cooling. We can find them in specialized shops or on the internet at prices that vary between 49 AED and 100 AED.

Well, we think we have said everything about this "hot" topic, all these tips are valid for both Windows and Mac pc. If you want to read other tips to keep your computer in shape take a look at the Computer Maintenance subsection. As always, if you want to comment you are welcome!
