Easy Steps to Increase Giving to Your Church

No matter the size of the church, giving is essential for your mission. It keeps the lights on and for most churches, it is a vital part of worship. But as our culture changes, many churches have been reluctant to change with it.

My experience growing up was to pass the offering plate in the church and donate using cash or check. I remember that it arrived and I put an invoice in which my mother or my father would deliver me walking. Before the end of the 1990s, people sent a check by mail or put cash or checks on the offering plate.

Fast forward to 2017 and give now takes many forms. People donate to nonprofit organizations and churches through church applications, websites, kiosks, text messages and more. Some church leaders have been irritated at the idea of having a kiosk installed in the narthex where people pass their cards like an ATM (and who can blame them?). Some churches even feel uncomfortable with the idea that people donate through a church website or application. But no matter what your feeling, times are changing and some trends are emerging that can take your church by surprise in a bad way.

Did you know that many people no longer carry cash or checks? I am one of them and I am over 40 years old, but if you go a little younger to Millennials born between 1980 and 2000, you will see that most do not carry cash or checks. They make all their purchases, donations and other transactions from their credit cards and telephone. What this means is that these church goers have no way of participating in giving a Sunday morning in a church that only passes a plate. Some churches mistakenly assume that Millennials simply do not give to churches that are not really the truth.

The truth is that Millennials can be very generous with the causes they believe in. But how they give is very different from how my generation grew. For them, the church online giving takes place. And before I conclude that I am about to suggest putting a certain button on your website, I am not. While a donation button on your website can be used from time to time, trends are even leaving you behind. What is happening soon is that most donations to your church will be electronic and most will come from a telephone and not a computer and not a piece of hard plastic. There is a good chance that 10% of your church would give in if you only gave them a new way of giving.

The means of giving are changing and a church that wants to invite such people to the worship of giving only needs to do three things:

1. Set up your own application for the church using Faith Teams. They are the easiest and most affordable.

2. Invite your members to donate through the application of your church anytime, anywhere. Your church will no longer limit itself to giving only weekly services.

If you do these things, some new trends should emerge. If you are a typical church in the United States, you should see a net giving an increase of 1.5% or more (depending on how you use your church application). You will also see donations increase for the first time, especially among Millennials. Finally, you will discover that having technology in your worship service is not as unusual or uncomfortable as you thought it might be.
