The Nitty-Gritty of NDT Level III Certification

Experienced NDT technicians usually have fewer options to advance in their careers. They may either further their education to expand their knowledge in various inspection methods or pursue a higher certification level, specifically level III.

An NDT technician can get a certification at three different levels: Level I, II, and III. Out of all the three, Level III is considered the best certification and professionals with this certification enjoy better job opportunities and a higher salary.

Understanding Level III Certification

In the world of NDT, an NDT Level III technician is given the most responsibilities and is expected to have knowledge spanning the entire NDT spectrum, including all the inspection techniques. Often, they train and supervise Level I and II technicians to help them get better at the job, and also conduct certification examinations for NDT. After obtaining the certification, they can also own testing laboratories or become a consultant to help a range of industries.

Job Responsibilities
When it comes to job responsibilities of NDT Level III services, they are responsible for establishing and designating reliable NDT techniques and procedures to be used, and interpreting standards, codes, and specifications. They are also required to know different materials, fabrications, and product technology. Alongside this, they may also train and supervise technicians at lower levels and conduct NDT certification examinations.

How to Become an NDT Level III technician?
While Level III technicians don’t need to have a higher level of education than high school diploma or its equivalent, their level of education does impact the amount of training they may need to earn the certification. Since their job responsibilities are more than that of Level I and II, the criteria to become Level III is more advanced.

They must have at least 4 years of on-the-job experience and that experience must be in the particular testing method or methods they are planning to specialize in. However, if they have a higher level of education, they can qualify for the certification with little work experience. Those who have studied science or engineering from an engineering college or technical school for two years, the minimum work experience is two years. On the other hand, those with a bachelor's degree are only required to have one year of work experience.

After the work experience, enrolling in an NDT Level III services course or program is vital to gain a complete understanding of the job and get practical exposure to different inspection methods.

Final Note
The school or college you choose for NDT Level III services certification is critical. The school should not only focus on theoretical aspects of Level III but also provide you with hands-on experience to train you for your next job.
