Teachers being replaced by Artificial Intelligence

We all have known teachers who despised technology. The literature teacher who never wasted an opportunity to pass a sarcastic comment on the computer science teacher, the sociology professor who feared for the future of humanity because of Artificial Intelligence. I doubt we'll run out of examples quite yet, since technological development and stimulated learning hasn't completely taken over the education sectors of the world.

But for how long?

Over the past decade, we can easily say that a vast majority of primary-level schools are rapidly incorporating the use of computers and online computing in their teaching methods. Teachers are asked to task students with online projects, students are being taken on field trips to major tech firms, and other similar changes that strongly indicate the influence of the technological revolution on education.

Observing this, many teachers fear for the security and future of their jobs with AI on the rise.

The Role of a Teacher

Writing essays on the importance of teachers and their role in our lives since primary school, we're all able to drone on about the role of teachers when we're asked to.

But what do we really understand about teachers and their importance in this rapidly-developing world of technology and stimulated learning? Is the word 'teacher' synonymous with 'mentor'? The answer is disputable since the role of teachers has been changing with the development of AI.

In the past, traditional classrooms were managed in a way that the teacher was the ultimate authority of instruction, and the judgment of a student's capabilities and skills was their call. Later, over the past two decades or more, teachers are given answer keys created by the regional board of education. That is used as the standard to which students have to match their understanding of a subject.

The Role of AI in Schools

Initially promoted as 'Teaching Assistants', AI has started to infiltrate schools all over the globe. The role of AI in schools is currently to grade and assess, and with e-learning becoming more and more common, the role is likely to expand to that of an individual tutor.

Applying the theory of Mastery of Learning, most online education programs need students to acquire a complete mastery of a topic before passing on to the next level. Unlike in the traditional systems of education, where it was up to the teachers to gauge whether a student had the abilities to get promoted to higher levels.

The Future

With AI becoming the norm in education, the role of teachers is going to change drastically. From being the instructional head, they will likely shift to being mentors or guides to nurture the emotional capacities of a student. It's improbable that the world's teachers will be driven to unemployment with the rise of AI, but it is true that the original purpose of a teacher is no longer going to be the same in the future.
