Who Should (and Should Not) Get the Flu Vaccine?

Every year, many people debate whether to get the annual flu vaccine. The fact is some should and some should not if they meet certain conditions. Here is a summary of both if you are considering visiting a flu shots clinic in Suwanee, GA.

Should

The general rule is that all people six years old and older should get the flu vaccine unless they meet certain exceptions, or their physician instructs them not to do so. Everyone should, however, meet this standard of care:

  • They only get a flu shot that is appropriate for their age,
  • Pregnant women can under the advisement of a physician,
  • Most people with an egg allergy can get a flu shot,
  • They have not recently had a cold or flu,
  • Children do not receive the adult dose of the flu shot.

Talk to Your Doc

For some, the flu vaccine is an option, but only under certain conditions. One of those is that their primary care physician approves of them getting it. People with one or more of the following should talk to their doctor about whether to get the shot.

  • You are allergic to eggs or any of the ingredients in the vaccine,
  • If you have ever had Guillain-Barre Syndrome (known as GBS.) Some people who have had it should not get the flu shot,
  • Anyone that is not feeling well.

Meeting any of these conditions does not necessarily mean you should not get the flu shot. It means you should discuss options with your doctor. For example, in some cases, adjusting the type of vaccine or the age formula you receive can make it safe for you to get the vaccine even if you have had any of the above.

Should Not

  • Children younger than 6 months of age,
  • Anyone with life-threatening allergies to the flu vaccine or any ingredient in the vaccine,
  • Anyone who is sick with a cold or flu.

Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine Considerations

Anyone who is older than two years through age 49, is healthy and not pregnant can take the nasal spray flu vaccine.

Who Should Not get the Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine

Any person who is pregnant, 50 years or older or younger than 2 years old. In addition to that:

  • Anyone who is allergic to the flu vaccine or any ingredient in the flu vaccine,
  • Children 2 years through 17 who are on aspirin or salicylate-containing medication,
  • Anyone with an immune deficiency or who are in close proximity to someone with an immune deficiency condition,
  • Children younger than 4 who have asthma or have experienced wheezing in the past 12 months
  • Anyone who has taken an influenza antiviral drug in the past 48 hours.

As with any medication, before you visit a flu shots clinic in Suwanee, GA, talk to your primary care doctor and go over any warnings that apply to you as well as any applicable alternatives.
