Electrostatic Precipitator: Components And Their Functions

In a refinery plant, various tools and techniques are used for purifying crude oil to get fine products. It involves a long crucial procedure to get different petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other flammable substances. The process is possible with the help of a device like an electrostatic precipitator. This machine removes unwanted dust particles present in raw minerals. Companies dealing with refinery businesses use electrostatic precipitator components in TX to improve their refining operations.

Components of Electrostatic Precipitator

The device is made of various parts and components to help it function when operated in the oil refinery plant. Some of the main components are:

• Electrodes

They are used for generating high-intensity electric fields and ionizing the particles in the flue gas. The negative electrodes are in the form of rod or wire mesh while positive electrodes are in the form of plates. They are made up of tubes containing welded and annealed copper wires of small diameter. They attract particulate matter. When these electrodes are connected to terminals of the DC source, a positive terminal of the DC source may be grounded. This makes the negative terminal stronger in negative electrodes.

• Hopper

It is a large pyramidal shaped steel container that collects the particulate matter. It has vibrators installed on the outer walls to release the particulate matter. The walls are insulated to protect the outside environment. When the dust is relodged from the electrodes, they are transferred into the hopper. The particles are discharged through an opening in the bottom when the hopper reaches maximum capacity.

• Rapper coils

They are used for transmitting a shearing force of high strength to dislodge the particles from collected electrons. The process includes breaking up of electrodes and particles by relapsing the caked-on dust layer. Common types of rapper coils are pneumatic or electromagnetic impulse units, electric vibrators, and mechanical hammers, and anvils. The electrodes are hit at a given time to collect the dust particles in the hopper.

How an electrostatic precipitator works

Electrostatic precipitators are essential in oil and gas companies for thermal plants where other fuel-burning activities are required. They have two sets of electrodes one is positive, and another is negative. Concerning the pollution problem, these companies install the electrostatic precipitator components in TX to ionize the impurities like dust particles in the air stream. The dust particles collected by electrodes are removed from collector plates. In this way, the device filters the flue gases before they enter the chimney. Henceforth, the process reduces the pollutant contained in the atmosphere and ensures a safe atmosphere.
