What Constitutes An Eye Care Emergency

They say that eyes are the window to our soul which makes them a very important part of our body. Our eyes are very sensitive organs that are made up of many essential parts to keep our vision clear. It may be unclear when it is necessary to seek medical care for an eye injury but because our eyes vision is vital if any of the following situations occur you should seek a professional's advice.

Trauma

Although it may seem like common knowledge that you should see an eye urgent care facility if you experience trauma to the eye some people attempt to treat it at home which can lead to lasting damage to your eye. A black eye occurs when there is trauma to the eye that breaks the blood vessels under the skin causing a bruise. This bruise typically starts as black and blue, then becomes purple, green, and yellow over the next several days or weeks. Although a black eye may seem like a minor injury the swelling of the tissue around the eye can cause serious damage to the eye such as a hyphema, or blood inside the eye. Additionally, sometimes the trauma that caused the black eye can also fracture the bone around your eye and in some cases trauma to other parts of the skull can cause a black eye as well.

Chemicals

We come into contact with many chemicals in our everyday life such as household cleaning products, garden chemicals, solvents used at work, and more. Your eye may come into contact with chemicals if the chemical splashes on your face or if you use the chemical and then rub your eye before washing your hands, sometimes the fumes from chemicals can get into your eye and cause a burn. The subsequent burn may cause your eyesight to become hazy and can permanently damage your eyesight. If you get a chemical in your eye it is extremely important to immediately rinse the eye with large amounts of clean water or saline. You should then seek immediate medical care to prevent further damage to your eye.

Foreign Objects

While a foreign object can certainly be irritating if it gets into your eye it can also damage your cornea. The cornea is the clear tissue that covers the front of your eye. Dust, sand, dirt, eye lashes, and other things can get into your eye quite easily and while some are just uncomfortable some can do damage. If you get something in your eye and cannot get it out you should seek an eye urgent care. Additionally, if you get something in your eye and manage to get it out but notice pain, light sensitivity, or redness in the following days your cornea may be damaged and you should seek medical care. If you are in an environment with machinery that could throw debris you should wear eye protection to prevent debris from getting into your eye. Objects thrown into the eye at high rates of speed are the most likely debris to injure the lens or cornea of the eye.

Eye injuries are common and can be minor but it is important to visit your eye doctor or an eye urgent care center if you suspect serious damage. Important signs to look out for are; a visible cut or scratch to the eye ball, something has completely penetrated the eyeball, any chemical enters the eye, pain, redness, headache or nausea with eye pain, change in vision such as blurriness or haziness, and uncontrollable bleeding are all signs that you should see an eye doctor immediately.
