Factors Affecting the Value of Maps

The value of a map is greatly influenced by supply and demand and eventually reduces to an agreement between the buyer and seller. However, some helpful generalizations are possible to make in estimating their prices. The major two broad groups of factors affecting the value of a map are associated with the map's identity and its condition. If you are looking for old maps for sale, here are the factors that affect the value of maps. By considering these factors, you would be able to find the right map at a reasonable price.

1.Age of the map
In most cases, the older map is usually more valuable. However, considering age as the only basis for valuation can be quite dangerous. You can buy maps from the 1500s for under 0.00 while old maps from the 1800s can be worth some thousand dollars and vice-versa.

2.Rarity
The next major factor affecting the value of old and antique maps is the rarity. More than a few maps were issued in small numbers and are comparatively rare. Rarity alone does not create value, however, the presence of other conditions that enhance the map, make it further enhanced by rarity.

3.Size
Another factor influencing the value of maps is their size. A great number of collectors prefer large maps. Such maps are generally more detailed and more decorative. Some collectors also prefer smaller maps as they are less expensive and easy to store.

4.Cartographer
For some maps, the map maker can strongly affect the price. for instance, Ortelius and de Jode both produced the same maps at the same time. However, Ortelius produced far more editions of his atlas than that of de Jode, whereas, de Jode maps are triple the price of Ortelius maps.

5.Aesthetic qualities
Some people buy maps with the only intention to frame them and display them in their homes or workplaces. People like this are more attracted to a map with scrollwork, fancy borders, sea monsters, fine coloring, and so many other things than to a plainer map of the same region and age. Many collectors also specialize in decorative maps. Consequently, the price of maps naturally increases.

While looking for antique maps for sale, make sure to keep in mind their age while considering the condition at the same time. Often, you may find centerfolds or some edge discoloration through age.
