The COVID-19 outbreak has become a global health challenge. There are thousands of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United State alone.

How can I keep myself safe?

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water arenot available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people. Close contact includes spending more than a few minutes within 6 feet of a sick person or direct contact like kissing or sharing personal items.
  • Stay away from other people if you become sick with flu symptoms, like fever and cough.
  • Cover your nose and mouthwith a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and immediately throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Daily clean and disinfect all frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Follow social distancing, avoiding crowded places or groups.Work from home.
  • If you are sick, stay home unless absolutely necessary. Wear a facemask around other people and avoid touching any objects or surfaces. (If you are not sick, you need not wear a mask unless you are caring for a sick person).

Should I get tested for COVID-19?

COVID-19 testing is expanding but the capacity is still limited. According to CDC guidelines, testing is prioritized for highest risk groups, such as hospitalized patients, healthcare workers, and people with symptoms like fever and cough or shortness of breath.

If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, isolate yourself to prevent the spread. If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19, seek immediate medical attention. Emergency warning signs include, but are not limited to, trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse and bluish lips or face.

How is COVID-19 transmitted?

The COVID-19 virus is transmitted through coughing, sneezing and close personal contact (such as touching or shaking hands, or touching a surface with the virus on it and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth without washing hands).

What are COVID-19 symptoms?

The symptoms of COVID-19 that may appear between 2 to 14 days after exposure range from none to severe breathing difficulty. Common symptoms are –

  • fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath
  • losing sense of smell and taste, in some cases
