What is kidney cyst?

Kidney cyst refers to the development of sac-like outer growth on the kidneys that get filled with waste and blood over time. Polycystic kidney cyst is an innate condition usually caused by the genetic mutations in one or both of the parents. Depending upon whether the gene is received by one or both the parents, PKD can be broadly categorized into two forms, Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, and Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease.

PKD not only affects the kidneys but also other subsiding organs, such as liver, spleen, pancreas, and ovaries. Clusters of fluid-filled cysts interfere with the kidney’s ability to filter the waste from the blood and remove toxins. A single cyst grows by 0.5 inches or larger and there can be possibly thousands of cysts on one single kidney. A kidney with numerous cysts on it may weigh as much as 30 pounds. So, it is crucial to treat it at the earliest.

Allopathic science does not have a sure sot solution for PKD, but only the treatments for underlying complications. However, ayurvedic science has some treatments like an ayurvedic remedy to shrink kidney cyst. When the cysts are made to decrease in size by shrinkage, the complications themselves get treated on their own. Frequent complications may include high blood pressure, pain in the back or sides, hematuria, urinary tract infections, heart valve abnormality, kidney stones. Some individuals may not survive the complications related to polycystic kidney disease and may lose their life if they do not take a promising cure.

What are ADPKD and ARPKD?

Like told above, PKD is categorized based on the inheritance pattern and the usual age of onset. The Autosomal dominant form of PKD has signs appearing later in adulthood though cysts are present since the birth. ARPKD may have signs and symptoms early in life or even before the baby is born. ARPKD is a rare condition and its ubiquity is uncommon with respect to ADPKD. If the baby born with ARPKD can survive the first few weeks of life, there are high chances of him living until adulthood. Nevertheless, they still need kidney shrinkage treatment in Ayurveda to improve longevity.

What can be the cause of PKD?

It is the mutations in the genes that trigger the growth of cysts on the kidneys. The genes involved in the development of kidney cysts are PKD1, PKD2, and PKHD1. A genetic mutation in either PKD1 or PKD 2 gene can cause Autosomal dominant PKD. There are two types of ADPKD caused by PKD 1 or PKD 1 gene.  These genes have the special function of transmitting a signal from the cells to the cell’s nucleus. The exact functions are not fully known, but these proteins (which genes produce) help govern the structure, organization, and function of the kidneys. Those with the PKD2 gene may have a less severe form of PKD than those with ADPKD caused by the PKD1 gene.

The occurrence of ARPKD has its roots in the PKHD1 gene. However, still, there is no exact cause known which that leads to the formation of numerous cysts on the kidneys.

Polycystic kidney disease is sometimes caused by nongenetic factors. These are called acquired cases of PKD and occur in people with other types of kidney disease or in those who are already on dialysis for several years. This is why Karma Ayurveda Hospital recommends patients to take an ayurvedic remedy to shrink kidney cyst than dialysis as Allopathy is not a permanent solution to this.

How is PKD diagnosed?

PKD can be done with the help of genetic testing. The doctor reviews the family history of the patient to know more about the gene mutation.

To diagnose the types of PKD, the doctor will conduct the following of the imaging tests, such as:

• Abdominal ultrasound
• Abdominal CT scan
• Abdominal MRI scan
• Intravenous pyelogram
