A few insights into how to learn Japanese

Just like a first-time swim lesson will not get you proficient enough to start doing the butterfly style right away, learning Japanese too takes time. Katakana, on the other hand, has more straight lines compared to hiragana. It is used to write words that have been taken on a loan like foreign names, other languages and onomatopoeia. Kanji are the Chinese characters that represent both sounds as well as meanings and are used for nouns or to make up the stem of the adjectives or as part of a verb stem.

There are also two ways that Japanese sentences are written, horizontally or vertically. Vertical writing is usually done for writings done for traditional Japanese. It is also used in Japanese language textbooks that are written for Japanese schools in Japan or literature, official government documents and newspapers. When written vertically, the words start from the top right of the paper and books are written in a vertical script open from left to right.

Horizontal writing is generally used for such publications that are related to foreign languages like books for mathematics, science, music, etc. Books with this horizontal writing system open from the right to left. The use of most punctuation marks like a full stop, commas, question marks, etc. remain similar to the usage in English though with some differences in their usage.
