1: Check Your Calendar

Your calendar isn't part of your car, but it should be. It is the most important tool for keeping your car operating at its best. Every Ford vehicle has a factory-recommended maintenance schedule based on its age and kilometres driven. It appears in your owner's manual and on the Ford website and will recommend a cycle of light and heavy maintenance checks for your vehicle's life.

They will even email and/or text you when it is time to make your next appointment. Truth is, they would rather see your car for regular preventative maintenance than have to recommend a major repair later due to something being neglected.

2: Check Tyre Pressure and Wear

Because your tyres are your contact with the road, they are arguably the single most important part of your car. They bear the brunt of the force if you have to stop or turn suddenly. They are also one of the easiest parts to inspect because they're right out there where you can see them.

A regular visual inspection for uneven or noticeable tread wear can be done just by walking around the car. Proper inflation pressures can be monitored with an inexpensive pressure gauge (and many Fords have built-in pressure monitoring systems). Regular rotation helps keep all four tyres wearing evenly and is a critical task on your maintenance calendar.

3: Check Oil and Fluids

All modern Ford vehicles have easy-access points for monitoring oil and critical fluids. Oil (and the oil filter) protect the most heavily-worn engine parts and need to be changed. Fluids keep your engine at the right operating temperature. Brake and steering fluids keep those systems functioning correctly.

Each of these needs to be regularly checked for the proper level and filled if needed. The oil and filter are typically changed every light maintenance period.

4: Check Warning Lights

Every modern Ford has integrated monitoring systems that will light a dashboard indicator if they detect an issue. It might be as simple as low tire or oil pressure or as complex as computerised engine timing. It is tempting to ignore these warnings. However, these indicators exist to help you catch problems early. It is far better to have a Ford technician tell you it was no big deal and simply reset the system than to discover much later that it was a significant issue addressed too late.

5: Check Your “Feel” for the Vehicle

Anyone who has driven the same vehicle for any length of time knows that you develop a “feel” for it. You know how it “rides.” You know its normal sounds and vibrations. You can tell when something feels a little “off”. Next to a regular maintenance calendar and the dashboard warning lights, this feel for your vehicle is a good indicator as to when it might need a checkup. In fact, it makes a good excuse to get your regularly-scheduled maintenance appointment a bit early (or a bit late if you have been putting it off).
