How to take care of your silver rings

Is your silver jewellery losing its shine? Are you worried that they don't look as gleaming as they did when you bought them?

Here's a list of the dos' and don'ts of silver jewellery so that you can keep them looking as beautiful as new.

• Wrap your silver rings or other silver items in a soft cloth and store in a box that is dry to keep them from being scratched by rough surfaces. It is also important to store individual pieces separately. That will prevent damage from abrasion further.
  
  
• It is important to keep silver dry to prevent it from oxidizing. To ensure this you can store a sachet of silicon inside the box where you will keep your silver jewellery.
  
  
• Keep silver away from the sun. While keeping it inside a container helps in keeping them away from the sun, refrain from wearing silver on sunny days or at the beach/pool. Sun is known to cause silver to tarnish.
  
  
• Make sure you do not use harsh chemicals on silver. While it is important to wash the jewellery sometimes when required, try to ensure you are not using harsh detergents that contain chlorine or sulphur to wash them. There are special types of soaps available to wash silver. Also, be gentle with the scrubbing as abrasion causes silver to tarnish.
  
  
• Wear your silver jewellery more often. Believe it or not, our skin's natural oils help silver rings stay more polished than isolating it inside a box.
  
  
• There is a common habit of women wearing their jewellery last. It is a very appreciative habit to be honest because the substances in perfumes, lotions, hair spray and makeup will cause your silver jewellery to tarnish fast.

Remember the popular saying "prevention is better than cure"? it applies to take care of silver as well. It is much easier to prevent silver from tarnishing than it is to fix it once it gets tarnished.
