The Two Protagonists of Spanish Football

The Spanish league, more commonly known as “La Liga”, is the men’s top tier professional football league contested between 20 Spanish clubs who rank at the top of the Spanish football league system. A total of 62 teams have competed in this competition since it was established. And there have been thousands of players who have played in La Liga, but only a few hundreds have managed to create history by their style of play and the records that they have set.

Out of those few hundred top players, let’s take a look at, arguably, two of the greatest ever players to play in La Liga, and two main reasons for many football fans around the world to buy Spanish football tickets and watch these extraordinary players manipulate the ball like no one ever could. Of course, the two players we are talking about are Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi.

Andres Iniesta

Frank Riijkard, former FC Barcelona manager, described Iniesta’s passing abilities as accurately as anyone ever could when he said that it was like “watching someone hand out sweets”. This statement that he made perfectly captures the essence of a player who combines an unbelievable technical ability with humility and simplicity that makes him a joyful player to watch.

Iniesta has won everything that a player can win not only on the club level but for his international team as well. Be it his famous last minute stunner at the Stamford Bridge to take Barcelona into the final of the Champions League or his winner in the final of the 2010 World Cup for Spain against the Netherlands in the dying minutes of extra time, he has achieved it all. Apart from this, he has nine La Liga titles to his name which shows how consistently important he was for his team, whether it was FC Barcelona or the Spanish national team.

Lionel Messi

The player who, by the age of just 23, achieved more than what most of the football players do in their entire career, was already being compared to the likes of Pele and Maradona, and asked if he was even better than both of them. After nearly a decade later, it seems that the question has been answered, not verbally though, but by the way the Argentine has improved his football game after game, season after season, never looking back. Of course, the player we are talking about is none other than, the greatest of all time, Lionel Messi.

If you were to look at all the records and achievements that he has achieved over the course of his astonishing career, which includes 10 La Liga titles, 4 Champions Leagues, record holder of 6 Ballon d’Or, and many more, we would forget the most important thing about Messi’s football; the quality and the way he influences the game. At the age of 32, Messi has cemented himself as the greatest player to ever play football, not only by his achievements but with the way of his playing style and the beauty of his game. Football fans from all over the world buy Spanish football tickets, just to watch this extraterrestrial player play football live, at least once in their lifetimes.

Of course, there are many more extraordinary players to play in the Spanish league, but to most of the football fans and pundits, these two just rank higher than the rest of the bunch.
