Naildgame(슈어맨): Leading Sports News Outlets Ignore Many Leagues in Korea

If you are a sports fan, you know most of the sports news outlets like 슈어맨 are available for your viewing or reading pleasure. What you may not know is that each of the live game broadcast outlets tend to be biased against the properties in which they have a direct interest.

I recently watched an NFL game on Fox. In a score ticker at the bottom of my screen I see that they show the scores from the English Premier League. Earlier in the day, Fox has broadcast a replay of Liverpool vs. Manchester United match Obviously the score is designed to increase interest in the property which they broadcast. I do not remember CBS or NBC never showed a score of EPL in their tickers. Obviously only the EPL broadcast partners see fit to display the score.

Furthermore, in the US, ESPN did not give much attention to the NHL. Coverage declined considerably after the NHL moved their game to Versus, now renamed NBC Sports. Rarely will you find a great NHL stories at the top of their espn.com headlines on the homepage. One could argue that hockey is not popular enough to warrant coverage in the United States, but the lack of coverage has been significant since they stopped broadcasting NHL games. Similarly, in Canada, the Canadian Football League (CFL) moved exclusively broadcast their games on TSN (The Sports Network). Games that used to be shared by the Canadian Broadcast nationally subsidized Company (CBC). Furthermore, in sports coverage TSN is broadcasting a competitor, Sportsnet, Canada and other competitive outlets has been reduced drastically.

This news outlets will report a score of course, but they will not dedicate another time in their daily schedule to discuss or analyze the results of the previous week or the upcoming match. Here's why: if ESPN or Sportsnet does not have the rights to broadcast certain sports, they noticed that every time they spent covering that sport or league as free advertising and promotion for their broadcast competitors. Why devote time during the evening or late at night the highlight or develop 60 minutes to focus on the sporting events that are exclusively broadcast live by a different network?

Unfortunately, if you like some sports, it means that you may not be able to get all the coverage you want in one place. You have to pick and choose outlets that cover your favorite sports best. If you want to NHL coverage, you may have to look beyond the ubiquitous nature of ESPN. If you want coverage CFL in Canada you have to go to TSN. Of course if you are online, you can just go to the websites of the league to give flowers.
