Surgery Causes Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction is a health issue commonly observed in men these days. Though this issue of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) occurs normally in men over the age of 40, men below 40 have also been seen to be suffering from ED these days. There are a wide range of causes and reasons contributing towards men suffering from ED. Researchers have opined that a plethora of health conditions and other factors can cause ED in men. The major reason for men to suffer from ED is the poor flow of blood to the penis which renders it to be in a flaccid state. Erectile Dysfunction or male impotence is characterized by the inability of men to get an erection or maintain it for a longer time in order to enjoy the act of sexual intercourse. ED is also supposed to be the leading cause of men suffering from severe depression around the world.

Surgery is defined as a specialty in medicine that treats a particular disease or certain disorders by cutting, removing or changing the body with an operative procedure that opens up the body towards therapy. Surgery simply refers to cutting the body and invading to correct certain aspects which might be negatively impacting the health of a human being. Surgery can be either minor or major depending upon the time it takes and the objective that is to be met.

There are various surgeries which take place which could cause complications in men and lead to erectile dysfunction in men. These include radical prostatectomy, cystectomy, transurethral resection of the prostate gland, rectal cancer surgery, hernia operations, circumcision, etc. These surgeries have a potential to damage some of the nerves associated with erectile and testicular functions. The outcome of these could cause scar tissues which could lead to blocking of local blood circulation into the penis and testicles. There may be trauma caused to the delicate nerves and blood vessels which are very necessary for erections to occur.

Although for most men erections return to normal in a few months after the surgery due to the healing of the nerves and blood vessels, there are a large population of men in whom this function of erection does not get restored due to the lack of blood flow to the penis due to the damaged nerve endings.

When men suffer from ED due to surgery and due to the nerve damage, it is important to consult a doctor who is the best person to guide you regarding restoration of sexual function and the treatment options available to treat ED.

Depending on the intensity of the ED and depending on what the actual complication is, the treatment options available for men suffering from ED due to surgery is summarized below:

1. Oral medications

 • Sildenafil Citrate (Viagra Generic)

 • Tadalafil (Cialis)

 • Verdenafil (Levitra)
