Driving license points: how to recover lost ones

The points system on the license has revolutionized the life and driving of all motorists. Despite being in effect for many years now, the fear of losing points is always lurking. In fact, small infringements of the Highway Code are enough to activate the point reduction: and if you overdo it, the suspension can also be triggered. But don't worry because there are several ways to get back in line and recover lost points.

When are points deducted?

The Highway Code contains a detailed table in which all the offenses involving the reduction of points on the driving license are inserted, a system introduced in Philippines in 2019 . From exceeding the speed limits to dangerous overtaking, up to the failure to stop for pedestrians to cross or accidents on the highway: the list is very long. However, there are three fundamental notions:

• they can be reduced from 1 to 10 points, up to a maximum of 15 if several infringements are detected simultaneously;
• the points are deducted from the driver , not the owner of the vehicle;
• For novice drivers, the reduced points double according to the infringement committed.

The license starts from a maximum of 20 points, which can go up to 30 in the case of driving without infractions.

The reduction of points is not considered in case of suspension or revocation of the driving license , sanctions imposed in the most serious cases of infringement of the Highway Code and beyond.

Two ways to recover points before total exhaustion

The risky situation to avoid is the suspension of the license, which comes when the points on the license are equal to 0 . There are two main ways to recover lost points. The first is not to commit infringements for a period of time equal to two consecutive years: in this case two points will automatically be reinstated, for a maximum total of 30 on the driving license (there can be no more).

A second faster, full-bodied but more demanding way is the attendance of specific courses for the recovery of points. After the frequency and the positive outcome of the final exam, 6 to 9 points will be re-credited , depending on the type of driving license.

How much do the points recovery courses cost?

Paying attention to your points balance is important not only to keep driving but also to save money . The points recovery courses have a cost in terms of money and time spent. You can attend these courses at driving schools or other entities authorized by the Ministry of Transport.

In the case of courses for A or B licenses, the costs are around 180 Euros , last about 12 hours and allow you to recover up to 6 points.

The situation changes with courses for driving licenses C, C + E, D, KA, KN: costs can go up to 400 Euros and courses last even 18 hours.

How to avoid the suspension of the license

As we reminded you, the most dangerous situation is finding yourself with 0 points on your license. In this case, the Motorization Office will review the driving license : you will then have to repeat the theoretical and practical tests that certify your fitness to drive. You will have 30 days from the notification of the revision order to carry out the exams, otherwise your driving license will be suspended indefinitely . During this period you can still circulate regularly with your vehicle or other means, but be careful to carry out the exams within the established time.

How to avoid suspension? Following three small tricks:

• periodically check your license points balance : you can do it online or by telephone on the specific Motorist Portal (after registration) or on the application of the License Authorization;
• take courses to recover points before the balance gets too close to 0;
• Respect a careful and safe driving style to avoid incurring infringements and penalties.
