How To Take Stunning Photographs With Mirrorless Camera

Nowadays, everyone is fond of capturing great photos. The majority of people love to capture their memories in those photographs to make them memorable. A mirrorless camera will make you capture stunning and professional-looking photographs. However, it’s a little bit complicated to use a mirrorless camera.

Gregg Jaden , Adventure Travel Photographer and Sony Alpha Shooter, talks about how he uses mirrorless technology to his advantage.

What is a mirrorless camera?

A mirrorless camera is a type of digital compact camera that is composed of a single interchangeable lens and uses a digital display system rather than a viewfinder. Unlike DSLR cameras, it does not have a mirror in it. Sometimes, it also refers to as DSLM (digital single-lens mirrorless) or EVIL (electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lens).

A mirrorless camera is almost identical to a DSLR camera in most aspects but it lacks a mirror inside it. The majority of mirrorless camerasproduces high-quality images, have relatively large sensors, full manual controls, and interchangeable lenses.

A DSLR consists of a mirror that is used to reflect the light passing through the lens to the optical viewfinder whereas in mirrorless cameras the photograph the photographer wants to capture is either displayed on the screen on the back of the camera or in the electronic viewfinder. “I switched from DSLR to mirrorless for two reasons. First the dynamic range was superior with 14 stops of dynamic range. Second, they are low light beasts. Their responsiveness to capturing detail in low light situations is state of the art. The first time I ever shot on a mirrorless camera was in Hong Kong. I was using a DSLR and couldn’t shoot hand held without high ISO resulting in a grainy image. I borrowed a friends Sony mirrorless and it changed my life. The images were incredibly sharp shooting night shots in Kowloon. After taking a few shots with a Sony mirrorless, I packed up my DSLR and never touched again. I replaced all of my DSLR gear with Sony Alpha camera and lenses. For the last 4 years, I shoot exclusively on Sony Alpha cameras” says Jaden.

Mirrorless cameras have multiple advantages over DSLRs. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • Smaller and lighter than DSLRs. Hence, easier to carry
  • Producing the same quality images as DSLR
  • Easier to use
  • Has interchangeable lens, full manual control, and support for RAW shooting

How to capture action photos?

The currentshutter speed is the most important factor if you want to capture an action photograph. To freeze action, follow the given steps:

  • Keep the camera in shutter priority mode. The mode is labeled as “TV”(time-variable) on canon cameras and as “S” on Sony and Nikon cameras.
  • Set the shutter speed to 1/250 seconds.
  • If you want to capture the more fast action photographs then you have to shutter speed of your camera.

How to take portrait snapshots?

While taking portrait photos you get the outstanding results with a shallow depth of field.

  • In case you wish to use a zoom lens on a mainstream camera then fix it to 35mm. To get a distortion-free angle of view on the subject, you can use a prime lens set up on 30mm Or 35mm.
  • Select the option Aperture Priority. This can be done by choosing 'A' on Nikon Or Sony and 'Av' on Canon. Set the camera using these features through the mode dial.
  • An aperture of f/8 can be used if there is a distance of 20 feet between the subject and background. An aperture of f/5.6 or greater is used when the distance is less than 20 feet. This is done to maintain a shallow depth of field.

 How to capture landscape images?

  • Set your camera  in aperture priority mode but manual mode works best
  • Set the aperture on F7.1 or higher to focus the distant things  well
  • If you want to include everything in the picture from foreground to background, set the aperture on 22 or even more
  • Use a wide-angle lens

“Landscape photography is where Sony mirrorless shines. I can use Sony mirrorless to shoot into the sun and still get details from the sky and clouds. Using F7.1 – F 22 usually is my range for my a7RIII Sony Alpha mirrorless camera. DSLR cameras usually need much more light to light any scene but mirrorless technology in Sony cameras is so advanced since they were the innovators of mirrorless technology” says Jaden.

How to capture images in low light?

When there is insufficient light in the environment, you may use a larger aperture and slow shutter speed to let more amount of light into the camera. “Sony cameras are masters at low light situations, I usually shoot 1-2 stops down. The dynamic range is so amazing that I can easily recover under exposed details of a photo” says Jaden.

If you want to capture an action shot in low light and you don’t have a tripod with you then you should set your camera to shutter priority mode and keep your shutter speed to 1/60 of a second, you can even decrease the shutter speed to 1/30 of a second.
