Many people living downtown choose to trade size for location: as a trade-off for living near where they work and play, their homes are smaller than ones found in the suburbs. However small your home may be, there are tricks you can pull off to make each room feel larger than it is!

When choosing a new sofa for your home or condo, it’s important to get the measurements right; you want to get a generous couch with lots of seating, but buying too large a sofa will make the room feel small. You need to balance the practical aspect of seating against the holistic needs of the space. 

You might love a couch that can fit all your friends, but you need to be able to fit other things in the room aside from the sofa! Another thing to keep in mind is that a dark couch in a small room makes the room feel smaller, whereas a light-coloured couch does the opposite.

Because of the glut of condos downtown, many stores sell inexpensive couches that look chic and are designed to fit small spaces. They look perfect in the ad, but they’ll degrade quickly — it’s better to invest a little more and have a real quality piece of furniture that lasts much longer.

The kitchen is one room where space is valuable but at a premium. Thankfully there are ways to give yourself more counter space. The walls are your friends! 

Using a magnetic knife rack on the wall saves you counter space taken up by a knife block. Consider getting a multi-tiered fruit bowl, rather than have separate bowls spread on the counter. You can also buy a hanging bowl to store fruit. 

Similarly, you can hang your pots and pans on the wall too. This gives the space a cool industrial look!

Mirrors

One timeless trick in interior décor is to use mirrors to create a deceptive amount of space. If you put a mirror near a window, it will brighten up your home and make it seem larger.

Lie the mirror on the floor vertically or attach it to the wall horizontally. This approach is commonly used in bedrooms, bathrooms, and living rooms — anywhere.

The idea of Feng Shui stems from Ancient China, and the basic principle is simple — the placement of the objects of the room should create a sense of harmony and order. Even the smallest room will feel warm and cozy if it’s well-ordered, but a bigger room can feel disorienting and cluttered if things aren’t arranged neatly.
