3 Habits To Avoid in Music Creation

You sit in front of your home studio. Eyes are sparkling with excitement. And you turn on your computer with the same dream always in mind - To create music that you will be proud to share with the world. But in the meantime, the path seems so long and full of doubts.

Even if you devote your guts and precious time to it, you feel like you are dropping gallons of sweat and still not progressing. Certain actions only slow you down and take you away from your dream. So that's why we decided to share these 3 “brake” habits with you:

#1 Watching Too Much What The Neighbor Is Doing

You listen to what others are doing, pros, or more experienced amateurs. Their productions take you off your seat while yours are already struggling to make you vibrate. And you feel disgusted. Getting inspiration from your elders is healthy to progress. You pull yourself up. But, on the other hand, comparing your level and theirs is just destructive.

Remember, to earn a black belt, first, you need to achieve a white. Show interest in observing their movements, asking for advice, and learning from them. Just don't compare your level. Get inspired by their works and find a form of motivation.

Treat them as a reflection of what you will be in the future when you have put enough time, heart, and energy into your passion. Don’t forget, patience and time are the two most powerful warriors.

#2 A Work Environment That Poses Barriers For You

You will relate to it:

You want to cook, but found that the utensils are dirty in the sink. Beep! “Hello, I would like to have a Margherita delivered, please, without olives.” And you land on your sofa.

The point is to minimize anything that might stop you from doing something you love, which here is starting a session at your home studio. If it takes around half an hour to set up all the things, you will feel the same as cooking (above) and will leave the idea.

Here’s what you can do in this regard:

  • Leave the equipment you use all the time on your desk.

  • Connect everything in a fixed way that all things can start at the touch of a switch.

  • Store elsewhere (but within easy reach) what you rarely use, like maracas.

  • Upgrade your tools with the ones that are easier to use and manage. Like you can use the online music mixer, which you can operate from your laptop or a tablet.

#3 Let Yourself Go To Chance

You know, when you open your project aimlessly, you go on an adventure with full sails out but without the destination. You ride cushy in tourist mode without following a route plan and tracing thoroughly.

The problem? Without an action plan, you can’t make adjustments that move your song forward.

It’s like working with a music mixer free online for hours, but the sound doesn't suit the project. Or like getting lost in your sample library without knowing what you're looking for. At the end of the session, you don't feel like you've been very productive, and it's very annoying.

You need to define what you are going to do before starting a session and stick to it. For example, finish the verse, complete the arrangement, record the acoustic guitar, etc. You can even schedule your sessions and what you need to do in advance. This will greatly help you to have productive sessions and for which you feel proud.

Final Words

When you fail, look up, stand, and start fresh. It is the learning process. We know it’s difficult, and sometimes you wonder if you will ever be successful? But be assured, if you stay the course and take good reflexes, you will get there. One day you'll realize that producing your own music is easier than you thought. And that you are finally ready to share it with the world, with your head held high.

So over to you now!
