What is an IP Address?

Every device connected to the network, including the Internet, have your Internet Protocol (IP) 192.168.0.1. Internet Protocol defines a standard digital methods used by computers to communicate with each other. These devices communicate with the give and receive datagrams, called data packets from the source device to the destination device and vice versa via the network. Each device has a unique IP address that allows the device to find each other on the network and for data exchange packages.

The network can be made using phone lines, cell phone, cable, Ethernet cable, and the wireless router. Routers are used to assign temporary IP addresses to devices connected to a local area network router control and to "with" data packets in the network to the correct device. Some routers have additional features such as encryption of data packets, packet error correction data, and wireless access.

Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) defines the 32-bit IP address is composed by a group of four numbers ranging from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. This is equivalent to about 4 billion IP addresses. A 128-bit version of Internet Protocol, called IPv6 has been developed that will allow more multiple addresses if IP addresses with IPv4 runs out.

How to use the Wireless Router IP Address

All wireless routers have a single Internet Protocol (IP) address used as the address for the local area network (LAN) and one that is used to connect an external wide area network (WAN) such as the Internet. internal address (LAN) is usually pre-set IP router manufacturer to the factory default IP address. When you enter the router's IP address into your web browser as an http request (eg http://192.168.1.245 for Linksys routers), the browser will send a request to your router to open the default router administration page so you can access the router settings.

How to find your IP address Wireless Router

The first place to check the wireless router in the user manual. If you do not have a manual or can not find it, you can try to visit the manufacturer's website and look for the default IP address there. Or, connect your wireless router with an Ethernet cable to the computer and the power and start the second device. If you are running Windows operating systems such as Windows XP or Vista, open a Command Prompt window (Start-> All Programs-> Accessories> Command Prompt) and type in the word "ipconfig" without the quotes the prompt & press enter. You'll see a list of IP addresses and one that is listed next to "Default Gateway" is the IP address of the wireless router you have connected to your computer. Next open your web browser and type http request using the same IP address, and you will see the router's administration page where you can login (user manual also will have the default username and password for the router administration pages) to change the router settings.
