Clamp-on Flow Meters

Pressure, Temperature, Flow and Level are the main variables that are measured in industrial and automation processes.

Regarding the measurement of Flow, or Flow, the market offers a wide range of meters, and each of them has advantages for certain applications, and disadvantages for others.

It should be noted that most of the available flow meters are inserted in line, ie inside the flow; this is to ensure the passage of the fluid through the meter itself.

In some ways it is not always an advantage to insert a meter on the line, because if it has to be removed for maintenance, it is not always possible to intercept the line in order to disassemble the instrument.

In other cases the meter is required for temporary measurements on the system, or for verification, and also in this case installing an on-line meter is not easy.

To solve these problems, the Clamp-On flowmeter is an extremely practical, reliable and economical solution.

Ultrasonic flow meters

The ultrasonic flow meters, both fixed and Clamp-on, are based on the "Transit Time" principle

This principle requires the installation of a pair of transducers on the outer surface of the tube to generate ultrasonic pulses.

These signals travel through the pipe wall and through the liquid, from sensor to sensor, both in the direction of flow and in the opposite direction.

In the transit time technique, two ultrasonic transducers act as both signal generators and receivers and are in acoustic communication with each other.

In operation, each transducer functions first as a transmitter, generating a number of sound pulses, then as a receiver for an identical number of pulses.

According to the principle of the applied method, sound waves traveling in the direction of the flow will move faster in a Time T1, than those traveling in a direction against the flow, in a Time T2

The difference T2 - T1 is defined Transit Time and is directly proportional to the velocity of the liquid and therefore to the associated flow values.

While elements such as flow profile, liquid type, and tube material may have an effect on the measurement, the meter electronics will compensate for them and adapt to changes to provide reliable measurements.

Clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters have a wide spectrum of applications and uses.

Accuracy can reach better than 0.5%, although in general practice it is +/- 0.5% to +/- 2.0%.

They also offer excellent repeatability of approximately 0.2% to 0.3%.

Other notable features are:

No drift, no pressure drop, no flow obstruction, low installation cost, no routine maintenance and easy and immediate replacement without having to interrupt the line.

In addition, they can handle bi-directional flows, a wide range of operating temperatures and offer a very high turndown ratio.

But the main advantage of Clamp-On ultrasonic flowmeters is their versatility and cost effectiveness.
