A Guide on Measuring Windows for Blinds - What to Know

Most people tend to overlook the influence of how you can dress bare windows. Often an underrated area in a home renovation, window blinds can change the way rooms look. They can keep a room dark, private, and peaceful, but can also confer a bright and cheerful ambience. The design matters too as its subtle touches can transform your living space - from neutral shades for a more classic finish to coloured pieces that add can spice up the overall style. However, for you to achieve both form and function when deciding on which blinds to put, knowing the measurement of the windows is an integral step to ensure a more seamless decor. It may seem like a daunting process, but these steps below can help you find the perfect fit for your home.

Ways to Install Blinds

Before moving onto the measurements, knowing which type of mounting and blinds play a significant role as the process varies depending on the mount type and blind style.

Inside Mount

The headrail will sit back in the window casing, which allows your window moulding to be visible. It also emphasizes the actual size of the window while providing a fresh and clean look.

Outside Mount

The blinds can be mounted either on the window moulding itself or above it. This provides the illusion of a longer and broader window, which works best for keeping privacy and having control over the lighting.

Types of Blinds

Vertical Blinds

This is comprised of individual slats that run along a track at the top of the blind. This perfectly complements bigger windows or doors.

Inside-Mounted Measuring:

Step 1: Measure the exact width at the top, middle, and bottom of the window.

Step 2: Use the narrowest width. Make sure not to include any deductions and provide the exact measurements as the factory will make the necessary adjustments to accommodate the headrail and mounting brackets.

Step 3: Measure the exact window height at the left, middle, and right side.

Step 4: Use the longest height, and similar to step 2, make sure to pass along the measurements without any deduction on your part.

Outside-Mounted Measuring:

Step 1: Measure the exact width where the blind will be placed.

Step 2: Add at least 3 inches for overlap, which is 1 to ½ inches per side, to maximize light control and privacy.

Step 3: Measure the exact height from the top of the headrail to the base of the sill. In cases where there is no sill, measure up to where the blind can reach.

Step 4: Similar to step 2, add at least 1 to ½ inches to the height.

Horizontal Blinds

This consists of horizontal slats that are ideal for smaller sized windows or doors.

Inside-Mounted Measuring:

Step 1: Measure the width of the window from the top of the opening to the sill in three places. Use the smallest dimension for the width as ¼ inches to ½ inches will be automatically deducted by the factory that will construct your blinds.

Step 2: Measure the exact height in three different places from the top edge of the opening to the top of its sill. Use the longest of the three top to bottom measurements.

Step 3: Measure the window diagonally in two places. Again, it’s best to avoid making deductions for this as allowances are made at the factory to ensure a perfect fit.

Outside-Mounted Measuring:

In this type of mounting, you can make deductions if necessary as the factory makes no allowances on outside mounting.

Step 1: Measure the exact width of the window, including the frame and moulding if there is one. Add three inches for each side, which is a total of six inches to overlap, to fortify better control on lighting and privacy.

Step 2: Measure the exact height from the top edge of the moulding to the bottom edge. Add at least three inches for the mounting area above the window.
