Cannabis: hope against seizures

The controversy does not come from today. Although mankind has lived with Cannabis sativa ( scientific name for marijuana) for millennia and hundreds of studies on its properties have been published, the subject remains taboo. Although the law provides for cultivation and use for medicinal and scientific purposes, there are no regulations in the country for the medicinal use of the plant, and in practice there are no clear rules to define under what conditions it can be manipulated. This situation changed recently, when the first Brazilian patient got an injunction in court to import and use a drug derived from marijuana.

Anny Fischer is 5 years old and has a disease called CDKL5, a rare genetic disorder that affects only hundreds of children in the world and whose main characteristic is the appearance of seizures from the first months of life - Anny was 30 to 80 a week. In these cases, seizures cause changes in neurological development and do not improve even when the child is medicated with as many anticonvulsants as possible - Anny even took eight at the same time. Most children who have the disease cannot walk, talk or even eat; it is as if she were a “rag doll”.
