Pros and Cons of EDI Testing

EDI Testing stands for Enterprise Data Integration. It is a set of methods and techniques that are used to test various components of an enterprise software system such as business process management (BPM), product development, technical support infrastructure and the application itself. These components are integrated through the use of a defined protocol. EDI Testing services help in the automation of various business processes, thus reducing cost, time and effort. Today, most organizations across different industries are opting for these testing softwares to automate their system.

Today, the testing projects are mainly carried out using the automated tools available in order to ensure maximum accuracy. These tools include both desktop and web-based tools. These tools help in the collection of test data sets as well as the comparison with the real time data set. The tool collects the test data form different devices and servers running on different operating systems. The test data may be collected from a variety of sources such as WAN/ LAN, EDI, database, applications servers and so on.

Most of the tools available today include automated scenarios that help in performing the tests automatically. There are several scenarios available for the testing of different types of EDI implementations. The scenario tools available in these testing softwares allow a user to specify the test cases to be run one after the other. The user can specify the test cases based on the test data collected from the device or server.

Most of the testers use the automated tools available in order to perform the EDI Testing. However, many of them believe in manually testing the EDI Connections if they find the complexity in the test cases. This is mainly because the testers cannot guarantee the expected results from the automated tools available. For instance, most of the tools available in the market today perform the logical queries in the EDI connections. This means that the testers cannot ensure the accurate results from the logical queries if there are incomplete data in the database.

The biggest disadvantage of the automated tools in the testing is that they consume a lot of time and resources. If the test file gets cluttered due to the excessive use of these tools, it becomes difficult for the testers to generate the test results. Another reason for the increased testing effort is the difficulty in collecting test data from the complex environment of the EDI Connections.

The third type of Testing is manual testing, which involves the use of the manual tools available in the market. Although this method is considered safe but the results are not accurate. This is because most of the testers do not follow the standard guidelines of the DAT File (Device Attribute Data File) format. The software used for the testing is also prone to error and the software is unable to read all the required DAT attributes with ease. If the testers encounter such problems while trying to test the EDI files, they claim that the software used is faulty.
