Types of CCTV Camera Cables Used In Security Camera System

Once you have the right cameras and surveillance equipment, you will need to choose appropriate cabling for them. Understand that there are different types of CCTV camera cables used in different security camera systems, and you need to make sure that you pick the right cable to ensure an effective and efficient surveillance system. Here is an overview of CCTV camera cables:

  • Siamese coaxial cables – Any standard definition surveillance camera (i.e. analog CCTVs) or HD over coax systems using HD-TVI or HD-CVI cameras can use these cables. The most noticeable feature in Siamese cables is two different cables stuck together to provide both power and video connections. RG59 is the coaxial cable that is marked accordingly. The video aspect runs the video connection from the security camera to the DVR through BNC connections, and the power cable delivers power to keep the camera running from the power box of the CCTV.

When choosing Siamese coaxial cables, be sure that they are appropriate for your system by checking their gauge. Different gauges are defined by the American Wire Gauge (AWG) rating. The smaller the gauge, the thicker the cable will be, thus, making it highly reliable in effectively delivering more power. Spooled Siamese cables are typically 20 to 18 awg and pre-made cables with a thinner gauge are 26 or 27 awg.
  • Pre-made Siamese coaxial cables – With a thinner gauge, they the lack shielding found in spool-type coaxial cables. Pre-made Siamese cables have pre-attached BNC and power connectors, making them economical and simpler to use when connecting cameras. However, you should only use them with SD analog systems that can support up to 960H cameras, and avoid using them with HD cameras to prevent problems with video. Keep in mind that they are efficient, but only up to 150 feet. Hence, they may not be the best for infrared cameras.
  • Cat5e ethernet CCTV camera cables – Although commonly used with IP cameras, these cables are versatile for analog systems, too. Just make sure you are getting Cat5e cables, not the conventional Cat5 cable, which should never be used with CCTV cameras to avoid problems. These ethernet cables expand video transmission range for analog cameras effectively up to 3,000 feet. When used with analog systems, Cat5e is attached with a video balun, which serves as a converter to make the cable compatible with analog.
