Any time you buy a cell phone from a mobile phone provider, it's always locked into that company's service. If the company provides you with a free or reduced price mobile phone, you usually have to agree to a one- or two-year agreement as well. Step 1

Get the 15-digit IMEI code. This is usually printed on the phone under the battery. You can also typically locate it in your smartphone's setting page or by entering a special code to get your mobile phone to display the number on your screen. In many cases, this code is *#06#

Step 2

Upon having found the IMEI code of your cellphone, get hold of your current service provider and ask them if they'll offer you an unlock code. Based on your circumstances, they could grant your request. Then again, many service providers often have thier own requirements that need to be met before they'll give you with an unlock code, and many can refuse. Usually, if you have completed your contract, your cell phone provider will supply you guidelines on how to permanently unlock your smartphone, but in most cases they will insist you're the original owner of the mobile phone (the contract on thier system is in your name). When you're not, for instance, you purchased the cell phone pre-owned, you'll have to find an alternative unlocking method to unlock your smartphone.

Step 3

For anybody who is not the orginal owner of the mobile phone, you are going to need to get an unlock code from a third party supplier. Thankfully there are loads of online suppliers offering services by merely giving them your phone's IMEI code, it's make and model and the network it's locked to. The cost of the service and the time it will take to unlock your mobile phone will depend upon the above mentioned factors, and can vary quite significantly for more obscure models or networks. Making use of a third party unlocking company is typically the fastest and the most hassle-free option to unlock your phone, as it is conducted remotely without your cellphone ever having to leave your pocession. As soon as smartphone's been sucessfully unlocked it can then be used with any carrier and in any country you wish.
